Level 1 of 33 · Electrical lab

Meet the bench and your meter

Level 1 of 33 in the Electrical lab: a free panel wiring exercise at Foundation level. Measure the bench supply, a 9 V battery, a resistor and a wire. Prove the board dead with a proving unit. Then light a lamp from the 24 V supply.

Goal

You are new on the training board.

What you do

  1. While the board is still live, measure with the meter on volts: the 9 V battery on DC volts.
  2. Lock out the board at the main switch Q1: switch OFF, apply your lock and your tag.
  3. Prove it dead, live-dead-live. Put the meter on the proving unit first (it must read), check the board reads 0 V.
  4. Wire the four conductors of the schedule: a 24 V lamp, and the battery across the resistor.
  5. With the meter on continuity, touch both ends of a wire you landed: it beeps. An open gap does not.
  6. Restore power and run the FAT. The lamp lights, and the resistor has 9 V across it.

Done when

The factory acceptance test is marked against the panel you built.

  • 4 conductors in the wiring schedule
  • 3 dead checks before you touch the panel
