AI Data Centre lab

AI data centre simulator: rack, power and cooling in 3D

AI runs in data halls full of GPU servers, and the work that keeps them running is physical: racking, cabling, power and cooling. The AI Data Centre lab in EDWartens Lab is a free 3D data hall in your browser where you practise that work.

What the data centre simulator does

You walk a 3D AI data hall and do the jobs a data centre technician gets in a ticket. You name the aisles, find the emergency controls, install a server on rails, connect it to both power feeds, and read the cooling and power meters. The equipment is generic and the operators are fictional.

The lab uses the same work order style and the same automatic acceptance test as the other labs, so each job ends with a result you can keep.

Eight levels in the hall

The lab has eight levels. They start with a safety walk and a hall tour. Then you rack and cable an 8-GPU server with A and B power, fabric and management cables, labels and blanking panels, and you fill a rack up to the PDU limit while balancing the phases.

The later levels cover a cooling hot spot, a month of meters to work out the PUE, replacing a failed part from a ticket, a training job that has slowed down and a power event drill.

Why power and cooling matter for AI

A GPU server draws far more power and gives off far more heat than an ordinary server, so a rack can hit its power limit long before it is full. The lab lets you see that limit, balance the phases and find what a hot spot does to a job. It teaches the thinking, using generic equipment.

Free, and part of the AI internships

Opening the lab, doing the levels and passing the acceptance tests are free with a free EDWartens account. The lab is in beta. Data centre tasks also count inside the AI and Machine Learning, Data Science and Analytics, AI Agents and Electrical Design internships on edwartens.com. The first 4 weeks of an internship are free, and continuing past 4 weeks is paid. An internship is training, not employment, and there is no stipend.

How it works

  1. Create a free EDWartens account, or sign in if you already have one.
  2. Open the Safety walk and tour the hall.
  3. Rack and cable a GPU server with both power feeds.
  4. Fill a rack to its power limit and balance the phases.
  5. Chase the hot spot and pass the acceptance test.

Questions people ask

Is there a free data centre simulator?

Yes. The AI Data Centre lab in EDWartens Lab is a free 3D data hall that runs in your browser. You need a free EDWartens account. You rack and cable servers, size power and cooling, and pass an automatic acceptance test.

Can I practise racking and cabling a GPU server online?

Yes. One level has you install an 8-GPU server in the right place in the rack, on rails, with power from both feeds, fabric and management cables, labels and blanking panels.

Is the equipment a real maker's?

No. The equipment is generic and the operators in the work orders are fictional, so the lab teaches the method rather than one maker's product.

Does it replace training in a real hall?

No. A real data hall has its own safety rules, permits and procedures. The simulation lets you arrive already knowing the vocabulary and the order of the work.
