Filling sequence

Level 12 of 19 in the PLC lab: a free PLC exercise at Intermediate level, which takes about 1 hour. Fill, settle and discharge a vessel in order with a step number, run the valves by hand within their limits, and stop a fill that takes too long.

Run a glaze vessel through an automatic cycle of fill, settle and discharge with a step number, add manual valves with limits, and stop a fill that is taking too long.

What you do

  1. Read the client brief and the tag table: 12 tags, 8 inputs and 3 outputs.
  2. Write the logic in ladder, Structured Text or SFC.
  3. Press Simulate and watch the plant answer your program.
  4. Run the factory acceptance test and fix what fails.

Skills you practise

  • State machine with a step number
  • Rising-edge start
  • Timers per step
  • Manual mode with limits
  • Fill timeout fault with latched reset

What the test checks

The factory acceptance test runs 6 numbered tests against your program. The numbers in the brief are drawn per learner. The tests are:

  • Auto cycle: fill, settle, discharge, back to idle
  • One press of Start gives one cycle
  • Stop, and Auto off, abandon the cycle
  • Manual valves obey their limits
  • Fill timeout latches a fault
  • The timeout watches the fill only

In this lab

  • Ladder, Structured Text and SFC in one studio
  • A plant that answers: motors, tanks, conveyors
  • Numbered tests mark your program
