Commission the transfer-pump starter

Level 1 of 10 in the Panel Lab: a free panel wiring exercise at Foundation level. Lock out, prove dead, wire the control circuit to the PLC, restore power and run the pump. A 415 V DOL starter with a 24 V PLC, built the way industrial panels are.

Detail
19 wires, lockout, meter checks and a PLC program

The starter panel for transfer pump P-101 has arrived from the panel shop with the power circuit and the 24 V supply wired. The control wiring to the PLC is yours.

What you do

  1. Lock out the panel at the main isolator Q1: switch OFF, apply your lock and your tag.
  2. Prove it dead with the meter, live-dead-live: prove the meter on the live incoming terminals, check every conductor on the load side reads 0 V, prove the meter again.
  3. Wire the 19 conductors of the wiring schedule. One conductor per terminal: X2 has spare bridged terminals for +24 V (1–6) and 0 V (7–12).
  4. Read the supplied PLC program. You may improve it, but the tag addresses must match your wiring.
  5. Restore power: tick the checklist, remove your tag and lock, switch Q1 ON, put the PLC in RUN.
  6. Test: START runs the pump and fills the day tank, STOP and the E-STOP stop it, an overload trip stops it and lights TRIP, and nothing restarts by itself. Then run the FAT.

What the test checks

The factory acceptance test is marked against the panel you built. The level sets out:

  • 19 conductors in the wiring schedule
  • 6 dead checks before you touch the panel

In this lab

  • Lock out and prove dead, live-dead-live
  • Wire the backplate from the schematic
  • Meter, tester, clamp and insulation tester
